Only one copy of Notify at a time can be installed on any particular Macintosh. If you try to use more than one, one will install at startup time and the other will complain that it can’t load its driver. But it may occasionally be handy to have more than one, and you may want to move alarms from one to the other.
If you have an earlier version of Notify, you may already have dozens of notifications set up in it. What a bummer to have to re-enter all of those.
These two situations are what the application Copy Notify is designed for. There have been a number of versions of Notify released publicly: 2.0, 2.1, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.2, 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.0.3, 3.0.4, 3.0.5, and now 4.0. Copy Notify knows the file formats of all of them, as well as a few versions that were never published.
When Copy Notify is started it uses standard Open File dialogs to select a source and destination Notify file. It then copies all messages from the source to the destination. If the source is an earlier version of Notify than the destination, features of the newer version will be defaulted appropriately. The source may also be an later version than the destination if desired, but some information will be lost.
Note that Copy Notify uninstalls any copy of Notify that may be running. This is to prevent file corruption, since Copy Notify is unable to determine exactly which file Notify will write to, or when.
